Astrophytum asterias var. nudum – Species Overview

  • Scientific name: Astrophytum asterias var. nudum
  • Common name: Naked Sea Urchin Cactus (nudum = “naked” in Latin)

  • Origin: Native to northeastern Mexico and southern Texas

Appearance & Characteristics

  • Body: Flattened, disc-shaped cactus, usually 2–7 cm tall and up to 15 cm wide
  • Color: Smooth, bright green to blue-green — lacks the typical white trichomes (fuzz) found on regular A. asterias, giving it a “naked” appearance
  • Ribs: 8 distinct ribs with minimal or no tubercles
  • Areoles: Small, spaced evenly along the ribs; may have short, woolly hairs
  • Spines: None (spineless cactus)
  • Flowers: Bright yellow with orange/red centers, around 5–7 cm wide, appearing at the crown in summer
  • Fruits: Small, woolly, pinkish-red with black seeds
