Coryphantha elephantidens ‘Variegated’
Family: Cactaceae
Origin: Mexico
Description:
Coryphantha elephantidens is a globular cactus species known for its large, tuberculate (warty) appearance and bright pink to magenta flowers. The variegated form is especially sought after by collectors due to its unique, colorful patterns—featuring shades of yellow, white, and green on the body caused by a lack of chlorophyll in certain areas.
This cactus can grow quite large for a Coryphantha, with individual heads reaching up to 15 cm (6 inches) in diameter. It has few or no central spines and large tubercles that resemble an elephant’s skin, which is where the name “elephantidens” comes from (Latin for “elephant tooth”).
Care Tips:
- Light: Full sun to partial shade. Variegated types may prefer a bit of protection from harsh afternoon sun.
- Watering: Water thoroughly when the soil is dry. Avoid overwatering.
- Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures but can tolerate mild frost if kept dry.
- Soil: Well-draining cactus mix is essential.
- Propagation: Usually propagated by seeds or offsets (if available).
Note: Variegated cacti are more sensitive than regular ones—handle with care and avoid overexposure to direct sunlight in very hot climates.
